One of the biggest challenges home educating families face when finding music tuition is availability. Most music teachers are fully booked during after-school hours and have little flexibility outside of them.
As a music teacher based in Chippenham, Wiltshire, my daytime slots are available specifically for students who need them — which makes me well placed to support home-educated children and young people whose schedules don’t follow a conventional school timetable.
Lessons can be arranged at a time that works for your family, whether that’s a regular weekly slot or something more flexible that fits around your broader home education plans.

The way I teach has always been built around the individual rather than a fixed syllabus or rigid structure — which makes it a natural fit for families who have chosen to educate at home.
Every lesson is one-to-one and fully personalised. There’s no prescribed curriculum, no pressure to hit arbitrary milestones, and no one-size-fits-all approach. Lessons are built around your child’s musical interests, learning style, pace and goals.
Some home-educated students want to work towards formal music grades. Others want to develop as musicians without the pressure of examinations. Many simply want to learn songs they love and develop a genuine relationship with music. All of these are equally valid, and lessons are tailored accordingly.
Instruments Available
I offer lessons across a range of stringed instruments, so there’s flexibility to follow your child’s musical interests wherever they lead:

For home-educating families, this can be a particularly valuable option. Music has strong cross-curricular links with history, geography, culture, maths and languages, and exploring it as a broader discipline can complement and enrich other areas of your child’s education.

Supporting Neurodivergent Learners
A significant number of home-educated children are neurodivergent, and music lessons can be a genuinely valuable part of a home education programme for children with ADHD, autism, dyslexia, anxiety and a range of other learning differences.
I have experience teaching neurodivergent students of all ages, and lessons are adapted to suit each individual’s communication style, concentration levels, sensory preferences and learning needs. There’s no pressure, no rigid structure, and no expectation that every lesson will look the same.
The one-to-one format means your child has my full attention throughout, and the pace and content of lessons can be adjusted at any point to make sure the experience remains positive and productive.
Grades, Exams and Informal Learning
Some home-educating families are looking for formal qualifications as part of a broader academic programme. Others prefer a more relaxed, interest-led approach to music. I’m comfortable supporting either.
I can prepare students for grades through ABRSM, Rockschool or Trinity — all of which are widely recognised and can contribute to a home education portfolio — or focus entirely on practical musicianship, repertoire and enjoyment without any formal examination structure.
The decision is entirely yours, and it can change over time as your child develops and their goals become clearer.
In-Person Lessons Across Wiltshire
I offer mobile tuition throughout North Wiltshire and the surrounding area, travelling to students at home — which works particularly well for home-educated families who prefer lessons to take place in a familiar environment.

For families further afield, or those who prefer the convenience of learning at home without a teacher visit, online lessons are available via Zoom or Google Meet for students anywhere in the UK.
Online lessons work particularly well for home-educated students — the familiar home environment removes any social or sensory pressures, the schedule is completely flexible, and the quality of learning is every bit as good as in-person tuition for the vast majority of students.

What age do you teach home-educated students from?
I teach students from primary school age upwards. For younger children, lessons are kept short, lively and fun, focused on engagement and enjoyment rather than formal technique. I’m happy to discuss whether your child is ready to begin before booking.
Can lessons count towards a home education portfolio?
Yes. Music lessons — particularly those working towards formal grades — can form a valuable part of a broader home education record. Grade certificates from ABRSM, Rockschool or Trinity are widely recognised and can demonstrate achievement in a tangible, externally validated way.
Do you offer trial lessons?
Yes — I’m happy to arrange an initial session so your child can meet me and get a feel for lessons before committing to anything ongoing.
How long are lessons?
Lessons are typically 30 or 60 minutes depending on the student’s age, concentration level and goals. For younger beginners, 30 minutes is usually the right starting point.
Can lessons take place at our home?
Yes. I offer mobile tuition and can travel to you, which works well for home-educated families who prefer lessons in a familiar setting. Alternatively, online lessons via Zoom are available if you’d prefer.
