Can You Do Guitar for Your Duke of Edinburgh Skills Section? Absolutely!

Guitar bass lessons teacher in Chippenham

One of the questions I’m asked quite regularly is whether learning the guitar can count towards the Skills section of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. The answer is a definite yes – and I’m delighted to say that several of my students have recently completed their Bronze and Silver DofE Skills sections through their guitar lessons.

My son finds it easy to connect with Adam and appreciates the way he builds the lessons around his interests. Adam has also supported him to complete the skills requirement for his bronze Duke of Edinburgh

A huge congratulations to all of them! It’s been fantastic to watch their confidence and musical ability grow over the months, and I’m incredibly proud of what they’ve achieved.

Why Guitar is a Great Choice for DofE

The Skills section of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is all about developing a new skill or improving an existing one through regular commitment. Guitar is an ideal choice because it combines creativity, discipline and personal achievement.

Whether you’re a complete beginner or you’ve already been playing for a while, guitar lessons provide clear goals and measurable progress throughout your DofE journey.

Along the way, students often develop far more than just musical ability. They improve their concentration, perseverance, problem-solving skills and confidence – all qualities that continue to benefit them long after they’ve completed their award.

How Guitar Lessons Support Your DofE Award

During your DofE Skills section, you’ll attend regular lessons and ideally practise lots between sessions, gradually building your skills over the required period.

Lessons are fully tailored to each student’s experience and interests. You might learn:

  • Your favourite songs
  • Chords and strumming techniques
  • Fingerstyle guitar
  • Reading TAB, notation and chord charts
  • Rhythm and timing
  • Basic music theory
  • Playing confidently with others

As your teacher, I will provide the evidence and progress updates needed to support your DofE Skills section where appropriate. You can check out my approach to lessons here.

Congratulations to My Recent DofE Students

Over the past year I’ve had the pleasure of helping several students successfully complete their Duke of Edinburgh Skills section through guitar.

Each student had different musical tastes and goals. Some started as complete beginners, while others wanted to develop existing skills. Seeing them stick with their practice, overcome challenges and achieve their awards has been incredibly rewarding.

“I have only positive things to say about my son’s DofE experience as a student with Adam. He seems to be coming on leaps and bounds, and really enjoying every lesson!”

Well done to everyone who recently completed their awards—you should be very proud of yourselves!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can beginners choose guitar for DofE?

Absolutely. Many students begin with no previous musical experience at all. Lessons are designed to build your skills gradually from the very beginning.

Do I need my own guitar?

Having your own instrument is recommended so you can practise between lessons. If you’re unsure what to buy, I’m always happy to offer advice before you make a purchase.

How much practice should I do?

Regular short practice sessions are much more effective than occasional long ones. Even 15–20 minutes several times a week can lead to excellent progress.

Can I learn acoustic or electric guitar?

Yes. Both acoustic and electric guitar are suitable for the DofE Skills section, and lessons can be tailored to the style of music you enjoy.

Do you provide evidence for DofE?

Yes. As your teacher, I can support your Skills section by confirming your attendance and progress where required.
